Devoted Human is passionate about providing high-quality, handcrafted goods that are made by American artists and craftsmen. We also value transparency, so that customers can make informed choices about what they buy and so they know exactly what we stand for. Transparency is also critical to our relationship with artists and craftsmen; we want to supply all the information we can to ensure that we are the right fit to work together. In service to that value, we wanted to give you some insight into our sourcing process.
Let’s survey our website’s terrain:
Devoted Human carries three distinct product ranges: cat, dog, and the animal-loving human. Our "For the Cat" section features beds, pottery dishes, ID tags, toys, and even a climbing section. (We have a craftsman working on creating amazing cat trees and hope to be able to offer those by the end of the year.)
Our "For the Dog" section features similar products, as well as collars and an organic skin-soothing dog soap, formulated specially for Devoted Human. The "For the Human" section includes clothing, jewelry, and pottery. This section also features paper goods, such as journals, cards, and books, as well as the visual arts, including original artwork and limited-edition prints. If you are a cat or dog-focused artisan who doesn’t fit into any of those categories, no worries! Our “Etc” sub-sections house products that fall outside of our most popular categories.
Devoted Human sources its products through a variety of avenues – arts and crafts shows, referrals, research, and artist/craftsmen inquiries. Meredith Bennett, Devoted Human’s founder, travels across the country meeting with various makers to find the most unique and beautiful handcrafted items by the loveliest and most professional artists and craftsmen this country has to offer. All of the artists and craftsmen considered for Devoted Human are vetted to ensure quality products and a high level of customer service. In addition to creating unique handcrafted dog and cat-related items, we look for artists and craftsmen who already have business processes in place to smoothly handle orders.
At Devoted Human, we want to make sure that the customer is not only receiving a unique item, but that they are receiving it in a timely and professional manner. What’s the use of offering beautiful high-quality goods, if the customer can’t get his or her hands on it within a reasonable timeframe?
We also work with artists who do a variety of volume. At Devoted Human, we feature both one-of-a-kind pieces and pieces that can be produced in greater volume. To illustrate, we work with artists who paint individual cat and dog paintings, as well as photographers who offer prints of dogs and cats that can be reproduced in larger quantities. The through-line that connects all of the artists/craftsmen chosen by Devoted Human is that they are all fellow animal lovers. And most of our artists and craftsmen are also dog and/or cat parents. We want to sell items by devoted humans to devoted humans.
As part of Devoted Human’s mission, we will feature and be making a donation to a different animal rescue organization each month. We will be working closely with a different grassroots organization monthly to create awareness of lesser known but incredible animal rescue organizations that serve animals in the communities in which our artists and craftsmen live. By buying from Devoted Human or selling your goods through Devoted Human, you are helping dogs and cats in need, which is part of what makes Devoted Human such a special online space.
Devoted Human is always looking to team up with new artisans. If you are an artist or craftsman interested in selling your work on Devoted Human, please visit Becoming a Devoted Human Artist. There you will be able to upload images of your work and tell us a little bit about yourself.
